CRA Editorial on Possible DC Outdoor Ban

When it comes to protecting the ability to enjoy a great cigar in Washington , DC , there is more than the federal government to think about.

There are proposals being considered in our nation's capitol by the Council for the District of Columbia that would prohibit outdoor smoking, known as the ‘sidewalk smoking ban.'

Not thinking a bar and restaurant smoking ban goes quite far enough, a couple of members of City Council, and most notably Mary Cheh thinks smoking while taking a stroll through Washington , DC should be outlawed. This type of over regulating the actions of individuals enjoying a perfectly legal product must stop.

Once again, a local government is seeking to control personal behavior, and to extend itself into the nanny state. Angela Bradberry of SmokeFree DC says it's meant to “close a loophole” of a “problem that has cropped up,” since the original bar and restaurant smoking ban in 2006.

We call it another attempt to have government dictate personal behavior in either public or private.

Call and email the Council for the District of Columbia . Tell them “enough is enough” with the over regulating of personal behavior, and that of all places, our nation's capitol should preserve the foundations of liberty and property rights, and defeat any measure that seeks to ban outdoor smoking in Washington, DC.
