Smoking Complaints Piling Up in NC

North Carolina's state health director says he's pleased so far with the response to a new statewide smoking ban inside nearly all restaurants and bars.
The Division of Public Health said Tuesday that 171 complaints have been received on possible violations of the law since it took effect Jan. 2. Local health departments are investigating those complaints. Customers ignoring the law can face $50 fines, while repeat business offenders can be penalized $200 a day.
The complaint totals will be updated weekly. Health director Dr. Jeffrey Engel said the law's effects on North Carolina citizens will be evaluated.
About 24,000 bars and restaurants are required to follow the ban. Cigar bars and nonprofit private clubs are exempt if they meet standards.
