Indy Mayor Pushes Cessation Over Bans
Indianapolis - Mayor Greg Ballard has a message for those trying to push a tougher smoking ban: help people quit smoking instead.
Smoke-free Indy wants to expand the city's smoking ban to bars and restaurants. It plans to unveil a new poll Wednesday showing overwhelming bipartisan support for the change.
The mayor says the current law, which bans smoking in restaurants and most public places, is sufficient.
"I really wish the people pushing this would try to help people stopping smoking. I personally can't stand it. I'm like others who get physically sick if I'm around it. I wish the people spending so much time on this would actually help people stop smoking," said Mayor Greg Ballard.
Ballard says he might be open to requiring bars to install smoke-eaters, or equipment that cleans the air. But he still doubts there's enough council support for any change.
