Louisiana Tax Dies in Committee
From the Alexandria Town Talk, with a comments section
BATON ROUGE — A House panel has rejected a bill that would have increased the tax on cigarettes by $1 per pack.
The administration of Gov. Bobby Jindal opposed the measure by Rep. Karen Carter, a New Orleans Democrat, which also would have imposed big tax increases on tobacco sold to pipe and cigar smokers and users of smokeless tobacco. The measure would have raised an estimated $187 million. The money would have been dedicated to health care programs that face budget cuts.
